What is there to say about this play that hasn’t already been said? Critics have trouble labelling The Importance of Being Ernest as literature or pure nonsense: The characters are witty but shallow, the circumstances impossible, the aphorisms subvert common wisdom. None of these debates matter because the play is such a joy to read. I don’t think any other book has given me a better laugh per page ratio than Ernest has.
